Families and community organizations in Cañaveral, a rural district of Turbaco, received 68 home gardens as part of a municipal initiative to grow food at home.
The delivery is part of a project that provides for 200 gardens in different parts of the municipality. The mayor’s office is carrying out the initiative through the Municipal Agricultural Technical Assistance Unit (Umata).
Seeds and tools for growing food
The gardens include growing beds, substrate, seeds, seedlings and agricultural tools so families can plant and care for their crops.
Eggplant, peppers, tomatoes and cilantro are among the crops planned. The aim is to improve access to fresh food and strengthen family and small-scale farming, according to the mayor’s office.
The project will reach other areas
The initiative aims to benefit 200 families in different parts of Turbaco. Alongside household consumption, it envisages selling any surplus to help participants earn income.
